Toyota RAV4: Gas Engine Fuel Economy

Toyota RAV4 MPGThe RAV4 comes standard with a 4-cylinder gas engine paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission. This combination is able to deliver up to 203 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque for an exciting performance.

In terms of drivetrain, this engine is available with either Front-Wheel Drive (FWD) or All-Wheel Drive (AWD). Your drivetrain decision will ultimately decide the fuel economy numbers you’ll achieve. These EPA-estimated numbers measure out to the following:

  • FWD: 27 city/35 highway MPG*
  • AWD: 27 highway/34 highway MPG*

As you’ll note, both economies are very similar between FWD and AWD. With either drivetrain choice, you can select to use Eco mode to further save fuel.

Another available AWD system is Dynamic Torque Vectoring All-Wheel Drive with Rear Driveline Disconnect. When equipped with this system, your RAV4 can travel up to an EPA-estimated 25 city/33 highway MPG.* In regular driving conditions, Rear Driveline Disconnect uses only front wheel power to save fuel.

Toyota RAV4: Hybrid Engine Fuel Economy

Want even higher MPG numbers? Check out the RAV4 Hybrid. It also has a 4-cylinder engine, but it now comes paired to an Electronically controlled Continuously Variable Transmission (ECVT). An ECVT can often produce heightened fuel economy, so it’s a great feature to have equipped on your side.

The Hybrid RAV4 already comes standard with Electronic On-Demand All-Wheel Drive. You’ll appreciate this added stability and road grip during slick conditions. You’re also sure to appreciate the stellar fuel economy, which reaches up to an EPA-estimated 41 city/38 highway MPG.*

As with the gas engine, you can access Eco mode to enjoy better fuel numbers. Unique to the Hybrid, though, is an EV mode, which activates battery-only power that can be used for short distances.

Toyota RAV4: Capability

Toyota RAV4 MPGWe’ve covered some aspects of the Toyota RAV4 capability already, but let’s dive even further into some of its features. With such great fuel economy, you’ll want to take this model on all your adventures. Luckily, it’s ready to go with all sorts of upgrades.

One upgrade is to the Multi-Terrain Select system, which is found on the AWD gas engine RAV4. It will help tackle a variety of conditions with modes for SNOW, ROCK & DIRT, and MUD & SAND. Similar traction support will be found on the RAV4 Hybrid with its standard TRAIL mode.

For even more fun, look to specific trim levels of the RAV4 that come packed with capability from the start. These models include the TRD Off-Road and the Adventure trims. Choose one of these levels to find exclusive capabilities like Downhill Assist Control and a 3,500-pound maximum towing capacity when properly equipped.
