Toyota 4Runner vs Honda Pilot

Toyota 4Runner

Are you deciding between the Toyota 4Runner and Honda Pilot for your next set of wheels? Either one would make a great choice, and it’s important that you make the right one. That’s why Ira Toyota of Hyannis set out to compare both SUVs for drivers in Hyannis, Barnstable, and Yarmouth, MA!

Toyota 4Runner vs Honda Pilot: Performance

Toyota 4RunnerIf you’re driving an SUV like the Toyota 4Runner or the Honda Pilot, odds are you’re big on rugged performance. That’s exactly what you’ll get with these two titans. Under the hood, both feature V6 engines that provide similar horsepower. For extra torque, you’ll want to check out the engine in the 4Runner, as it delivers 278 lb-ft to the 260 lb-ft the Honda gives you.

You’ll find that each SUV offers standard Hill Start Assist Control and different drive modes that adapt to the surface you’re riding on. The 4Runner offers four different modes, while the Honda Pilot only offers three, so you’ll have a little more wiggle room with the 4Runner.

Additionally, the 4Runner is better equipped to handle obstacles on the ground, as it gets nearly 10 inches of ground clearance. The Honda Pilot can handle a lot as well, as it offers 7.3 inches of ground clearance across all its trims except the TrailSport, which gives you around 8 inches.

4Runner vs Pilot: Infotainment

Toyota 4RunnerPart of the fun of driving the Toyota 4Runner or Honda Pilot is the ability to access incredible technology, specifically infotainment, as who can resist blasting their favorite songs unapologetically? With these SUVs, you’ll be treated to many similar standard features, including 8-inch infotainment screens with wireless Bluetooth®, Apple CarPlay®, and Android Auto™ capabilities.

Another similarity you’ll find in the infotainment realm is that they both have Wi-Fi hotspot capabilities, but they are standard across all the 4Runner trims, whereas they come standard in only a handful of Pilot trims.

Where the 4Runner really sets itself apart from the Pilot is with its available sound system. When fully equipped, the 4Runner features 15 speakers from JBL® that include a subwoofer and amplifier for crystal-clear sound. You’ll also get a great sound system inside the Honda Pilot that also includes a subwoofer, but you’ll have five less speakers.

Toyota vs Honda: Safety

Toyota 4RunnerSafety is the foundation upon which the Toyota 4Runner and Honda Pilot were built. Like the infotainment and performance features before them, you’ll find tons of similar safety features, including:

  • Automatic High Beams
  • Vehicle Stability Control
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System
  • Lane Departure Alert
  • Cruise Control

What really sets the Toyota apart here is with Safety Connect®. This is a suite of safety features that are designed to dispatch necessary aid to your location when you need it and help locate your vehicle if it’s ever stolen.

In some scenarios, specifically when the airbags are deployed or a rear-end collision occurs, the vehicle will send a signal to our 24/7 response center, where an agent will attempt to speak with you and figure out what kind of assistance you need. If you break down, you can press the Emergency Assistance Button inside the vehicle, which will connect you with an agent who can send a tow truck.

While the Honda Pilot is also very safe, it doesn’t have the type of features you’ll get with Safety Connect®.

Toyota 4Runner vs Honda Pilot: Winner

One thing is certain, when you are choosing between the Toyota 4Runner and Honda Pilot, you’re going to enjoy every trip you take. Ira Toyota of Hyannis considers the 4Runner the superior vehicle, though, based on many of its performance, infotainment, and safety features.
