The easiest way to test a car battery's voltage is to have a multimeter handy. These devices measure electric current and voltages, making it convenient.

Start by turning off the ignition, the lights, and the radio, assuming it doesn't turn off automatically. Set the multimeter to 20V DC. Then, just as you would with red and black jumper cables, place the red lead on the positive battery terminal, which will be covered with a red cap or + symbol. Afterward, place the black lead on the negative terminal.

You'll want to charge your battery if the measure is below 12.4 volts. Anything higher than that means the battery is in good shape.

If you see a negative number, you've attached the multimeter leads backward, so ensure that you're connecting them correctly to get an accurate reading.

In addition to performing battery tests with a multimeter, there are signs you can look for that indicate a failing battery. Some of these signs include:

• Clicking sounds when attempting to start the car: When you turn the key in the ignition, your vehicle should start immediately. If you hear a clicking sound and all your lights flicker, your battery is out of power. It may need to be jumpstarted or replaced.
• Dim headlights: The battery may fail if your headlights are suddenly dim.
• Sparking: A low-power battery can spark when you try to start your car. While this doesn't guarantee a battery issue, that could be the cause. Have a professional look over your ride ASAP.
• Pressing on the gas pedal to start: If you need to press on the gas pedal to start your car, your battery is likely failing.
